Yes dear friendslist, I finally attempted some Firefly fanfic. The challenge at
ff_friday was vampires and that paired with the 10th year BtVS anniversary gave me a plot bunny and I FINALLY wrote it down instead of just thinking up stories. So for those who may be interested, here's my attempt:
Title: Bright Lights, Blue Hands
Summary: River thinks about what vampires truly are.
Disclaimer: Joss is the genius, I'm just playing.
Spoilers: The R.Tam Sessions and Safe
Rating: G
Word Count: 321
** thanks to the fabulous
browncoat_2x2 who was my beta for this story :) **
Vampires didn't live in the Black, River knew that now. The tangled up stories from childhood of monsters in the dark were not as factual as they'd once seemed. Vampires lived in the core, bright lights, blue hands, always taking bits from her. Sent to live at the academy she was learning that it was in the bright sterile light that she could not escape. If it were dark she might have had a chance.
In the light they were always sipping at her mind instead of her veins. Starting off with tastes so small she did not know she was to be their food. How naive she'd been at the start. Eager to give them anything. Then things started to disappear without her offering them. Names, equations, dance steps, two forward and three to the left, nothing left nothing left!
Nothing left to staunch the flow from her mind. River saw now, vampires were all around her, taking what she did not want to give, giving her new knowledge to fill the gaps. Not hers to know, but it was hers now.
Her last desperate act was an attempt at escape - sent word out to Simon before they could make her forget who he was. Names and dates all wrong, if they thought she'd forgotten then their fangs couldn't pierce the code, her message would be untasted…
Simon hadn't come. Four weeks later and he hadn't come. Her wounds were too great for her to wait any longer.
Now it was just she, small girl in a dark room, another vampire across from her, and a new mission to complete. It was time for her to become a vampire as well. They took her blood, now she would take theirs. No other choice, no one else to be anymore. Without their lights they could not see what she would truly become. Her mind, in these moments, would be unseen.

If it were dark she might have had a chance. - This line, especially, gets me, and I can't explain why. Really, though, the entire thing is pretty and smart and just creepy and unsettled enough to make it right.

And I REALLY like what you did in the last sentences. That works SO good!
Well, now that you've got the taste, I hope we'll be seeing more from you, darlin'! :oD

The ending was creepy, in no small part because you made me think about the R. Tam sessions, which are pretty creepy to start with.
Nice job! Glad you posted it. :)
