NYC day 2
Thursday in NYC:
I was up early with Ava and Julie on Thursday morning. That way I was able to get into the city early and have a nice breakfast in Bryant park before really starting my day. Randomly I forgot how awesome NYC water is for my hair, my hair is always so soft when I’m there. I wouldn’t think that would be the case but it is.
After breakfast I wandered through a bookstore and then gave
madelineanne a call and arranged to meet up with her for coffee later in the day. I kept wandering up 5th Avenue for a while and decided to go into St. Patrick’s church just to see it. It’s a beautiful building. I was not so much a fan of their being donation boxes every 3 feet. Seriously that was a little much. But the statues and carvings and stained glass windows were just lovely.
I met up with Madeline for coffee which doubled as my lunch and that was lots of fun. It’s always neat to meet LJ people because you sort of feel as though you already know them. I would have guessed her profession to be actress even had I not known her through LJ though, she just has that sort of outgoing personality which corresponds well with the acting profession.
After lunch I headed up to the Cloisters. I’m so glad that
abbagirl posted about going there, I’d never heard of this place before that. It’s way way north. You take the subway to 190th st and then walk north (or I think you can also transfer to a bus) from there. I walked since the park there was beautiful and the weather was great. The Cloisters was just awesome. I loved getting to see The Unicorn Tapestries in person. I knew they were huge but actually seeing them and thinking of all of the work that must have gone into making them was something else altogether. A lot of the art was based in religion so with this and the church visit earlier in the day I had my complete share of Christian education. Once I’d finished looking through the Cloisters I had some time left before I had to meet up with Ava so I thought I’d check out the Egyptian exhibit at the Met. as I enjoy Egyptian things and the Museum of Natural History does not have very much at all in their Egyptian exhibit. So I took the bus back down to the Met. The bus is alright for speed until you reach Central Park, then it slowed to a crawl and I got off early and just walked the rest of the way.
I managed to do the Egyptian and the Greek & Roman exhibits before the Museum was about to close and I had to run to meet Ava for the RENT lotto.
I made it to the Nederlander theatre a bit early and watched the crowd for lotto. By the time Ava arrived I was pretty sure we didn’t have a chance of winning but we played anyways. It turns out that I still cannot lose that lottery because I won the last two front row seats (113/114) which turned out to be the Luther Creek seats for much of the show. That he’s even still in RENT cracked me up. Sadly Ava didn’t win as well so we didn’t have a third ticket for Julie but she’d already seen Adam and Anthony during the summer so all was well. We saw some girl have to forfit her seats since she didn’t bring cash to pay for them. I feel badly for people when that happens but then again the rules of lotto seats are very simple and usually are standard for all shows. If you get rush/lotto seats you’re paying in cash and have an ID handy. When people can’t manage that it’s a little worrisome ;)
Both Adam and Anthony were on that night (they of course were the reason why we decided to do lotto) and Tamyra Grey was out so we had Antonique as her understudy and she is a fantastic Mimi so all was well. Our Collins swapped out during intermission. Of all the case he was one who didn’t sound as though he was sick. Both Adam and Antonique sounded as though they both had colds so when the announcement started I thought it was going to be for one of them. It has been a while since I last saw RENT, I found myself a bit teary for the show which was nice. It was fun to see Adam and Anthony in their original roles. They’re both too old to be in the show but for the fun of seeing them in this show that was so pivotal for me it worked. The current Maureen is crazy and reminds me of Jen Aubry. Haven is in as Mark’s Mom (seriously, no one EVER leaves this show!) which was neat since I do like her performance in that role. The rest of the cast was really good, I was reminded actually of the TO cast just by the way they interacted with each other. We didn’t line up for autographs after but I snapped a few pictures of Anthony as he did the stage door thing. Adam didn’t come out as he was sick and had left right away.
And that’s the end of day 2 in NYC.
Photos will be coming soon, I'm just working on resizing them.
