Last night Viv and I went to see Stardust. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie for months, as soon as I saw a preview I knew it had the potential to be great. I talked Viv into going, she had no idea what I was convincing her to see lol. We met up early and did some wandering around, shopping (I managed to buy only 1 book at BMV – Tales of the Slayer v. 2 – very impressive restraint for me), a massive sugar rush at Sugar Mountain, and a quick dinner at Amato pizza and we were off to Stardust.
I really really really liked this movie. Judging from the previews there are a bunch more movies which will be released in the next year that are all this type of fantasy movie. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them all :) I’d read the book by Neil Gaiman before seeing the movie and I was glad that I did. The film stuck pretty closely to the book, which I figured would be the case since the book didn’t get nearly as detailed as it had the potential to be, but it did deviate on a couple of main points and glossed over some other things.
The entire backstory of how Tristram (and I’m sure in the book it was Tristram not Tristan unless I had a faulty copy) was conceived and born was changed. The key detail of who his mother was stayed the same along with the flower seller stayed the same but the entire premise of how his father came to be on the other side of the wall was changed.
Also in the movie the characters stayed more black and white, good and bad. The bratty rich girl who Tristram courts was still a brat at the end of the movie while in the book she’d redeemed herself quite a lot. The same with the evil witch who is trying to cut out the heart of the star, in the book she has to let Yvaine go because by the time she catches her Yvaine has given her heart away whereas in the movie there was a huge showdown with Tristram and Yvaine against the witch. That did work well for film though and I think probably was a good decision. There’s a bit more from the ending that’s different but I’ll leave that to people to read and find out ;)
Aside from the few changes the rest stuck very well to the book and I just loved the movie. The casting was fantastic! Robert DeNero was hilarious, actually there were a lot of really well done humorous scenes throughout the movie, the adventure was kept fast paced, the setting was just beautiful. I am so getting this one on DVD right away.
Oh and we had a preview for The Golden Compass again (I think I’ve seen a preview for that movie at every movie I’ve seen since about January!) and I’m very much looking forward to that one. I think it’s going to be superb.
After the movie Viv bought a copy of Stardust to read and it wasn’t too cold out to hang out for a bit so we spent some time just chatting. I really like that I live closer to downtown now so I can start to see my friends at this end of town again more often! Then I was able to go back to my apartment and while there was no a/c to turn on while I slept it’s cooled down enough in the evenings that I don’t really need it. Hurray! Next summer I’m sure I’ll be not so pleased but for now all is well.

I'm not saying the movie wasn't good, but I am saying that I would always choose the book and the right ending and the right main plots/differences, better than the movie version. I think the last movie that I saw which was based on a book, was Blood and Chocolate and I was seriously pissed off with that movie and how it turned out. It changed up the ending completely and there were key points and important things that they left out of the movie that was in the book. That movie is a world of suck and wasn't even worth my time watching it. Grr. I'm seriously glad, that I didn't see it in the theatre.
And I can't wait to see, The Golden Compass, myself. I know that's going to be such a great movie. I've always loved these fantasy type movies. lol.
Hmm, what else about Stardust? lol. Ooh, DeNero, I loved him in this movie. Since, I can't remember his character's name I have affectionately referred to him as, Twinkletoes Whoopsie ever since. Hahaha. ;)

Books are always better than movies, but I found I could appreciate the changes made here and could see why they were made. I still like the ending of the book vs the movie ending but that for me didn't make the movie ending bad, just I like the other way best.
The book is quite good. I was slightly disappointed with it because it just felt like it was almost rushed over and could have been more detailed and descriptive. However it still was a great classical magical story :) Definitely worth reading :)
