still allergic... ew

So my random allergic reaction to my parent's dog is not stopping. I've completely stopped touching the dog, sitting in any room she sits in, touching anything she touches and yet still I get worse. I feel like Quasimodo. So I figured that perhaps I should go to the doctor tomorrow... only to find my fraking health card has expired. So I'll be renewing that tomorrow and possibly spending Tuesday morning (Canada Day) in the ER so I can get a shot or something to make this stop. Then I'll have to book allergy tests so I can find out exactly what this is and how to treat it.

I am lucky to have a great brother who not only makes awesome Veronica Mars jokes but has said he'll come keep me company in the ER because my dad's working and my mom will have just come back from working out of town so she won't want to do it. So he's being cool and will keep me company. His girlfriend gets less cool points because she's told him she's pretty grossed out having to share a bathroom with me right now. Newsflash, allergies are not contagious. So I look icky but it's not any risk to her health or appearance.

I'm so not good with having allergies. I've spent much of my life being allergic to nothing and then now I get a huge allergy like this out of nowhere. Apparently the world has decided that I get to have all of my allergies at once. Fabulous :S

He's younger. Now that we're both adults we get along really well, he's a good kid brother to have :)

Thank you, I hope I get well soon too :)

...our health cards expire?

Or is that just the new kinds, with our pictures on them and stuff? Because I am still rocking the old red-and-white one; no one has ever told me I need to get a new one.

His girlfriend gets less cool points because she's told him she's pretty grossed out having to share a bathroom with me right now.

Epic fail, girlfriend. Epic fail, indeed. *tsk*

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Don't ever get the new ones, they're a pain! The old ones so far don't expire and there's no need for the new one. I lost my old one in high school hence the photo one.

Yeah, his girlfriend gets a lot of epic fails. I think she's a nice enough girl most times but she and I are people who would not interact at all if she weren't dating my brother.

I just looked at the health card office to be sure and yes, your red and white card is still valid. They talked about phasing them out years and years ago but haven't done it yet.

Not cool. :( Sorry!

Hopefully something will give, and it will go away... Dumb dog! (Not really... but dumb dog!)

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I read that they give shots sometimes for severe reactions and I think I qualify. So I'm hoping I can get something that'll help like that. I feel so bad, the dog has been so confused this weekend because I won't pet her. But yeah, still dumb dog, I so wish I weren't allergic to her.

[identity profile] planet-y.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, the dog probably thinks she did something bad... well she kinda did, but still a little sad...

Hopefully they can give you something! A shot makes sense... blah :(

wow! your brother's girlfriend also loses smart-points. You're not diseased!

I forgot to ask you, are you taking anything for the hives, like Benadryl?

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yup I'm taking benadryl and using cortizone cream and still nothing helps. :S

And exactly! I look gross right now, but I have nothing that's contagious. I'm actually excessively clean even when I'm having an outbreak like this because I worry about infection.

Hope you're all fixed up soon. I've had allergies all my life, including severe allergies to cats -- since I'm living with four of them, it can obviously be controlled!

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good to know :) I sure wouldn't want to have to live without having a pet dog ever again if that's what I'm allergic to. I'll have to do tests later to find out what this is.

Those of us with cat/dog allergies would be better off giving up on the pets we're allergic to, rather than take the long term medications. But -- of course -- animal lovers just aren't going to do that!

Boo allergies, and boo brother's girlfriend. Is she living at your parents' house? Or is she just complaining about sharing the bathroom when she comes over? Weird.

They will probably give you a shot of Benadryl, and maybe a prescription steroid cream. Julie had a severe reaction to some sunscreen a couple summers ago that sent her to the ER, and that's what they gave her. It worked. Once you get the immediate problem sorted out you should try Claritin for every day, to keep the allergies under control. Julie uses the store-brand version of Claritin.

Brother's girlfriend is over at the house ALL OF THE TIME. She doesn't live there but she spends a lot of time there. I don't know where her parents think she is as she isn't allowed to date white boys and so they don't know about my brother. They're just like kids playing house though, they act like they're in my brother's apartment or something but it's my parent's house. I saw her the other day walking around in a tshirt and underwear between the bedroom and bathroom and could not believe it! Sleep like that fine but in your boyfriend's parent's house then it's just good form to wear pants or shorts when walking in the hallway.

That sounds about right to me. I did some research online and that's what most people say they got. As long as I get something strong I'll be happy :)

Not a fun time! Hopefully you can find some meds that will help!

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
no joy yet, I got some stuff to use while waiting for more diagnosis. But the wait at the hospital was super fast so it's not like I lost a whole day to be told "nothing we can do"

That's a good thing, at least... ERs are generally the last place you wanna be when you don't feel well.

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I timed it well and went in just after 9, after the night emergencies are done but before the holiday mishaps have really started. There were just a handful of people there, I was done in about 2 hours which was great timing.
