And I think the D drive has bit the dust :( Not good as it was running so slowly that I didn't manage to get more than 1/3 of my stuff transferred off of it. Now everytime I try to open the drive I get the "this drive has not been formatted, would you like to format the drive?" message. Hell no I would not because then everything is gone. Does anyone have any idea as to how to get around that?

Sooooooooooo many movie/music files are going to be lost now. Le sigh. I'll be posting wish lists as soon as I can do a run down of the important things which are gone.

For now I'm off for the day to do something that does not involve my computer for a while. I heard my roommate get up around 10 and went out to say hi to her as she was having breakfast and she was all "oh you slept in finally!" (as I looked like I'd just fallen out of bed I'm sure) and I had to tell her that no, I'd been up since 7 as well as getting up several times in the night to try to transfer more files. To which she replied "oh... then you look really really tired." Clearly I need a break from all things computer until tonight :)

Search on Google for freeware hard drive recovery and you should find a couple programs. Install them onto your system and try accessing the drive that way. You may be surprised at what you can find.

What I learned when I lost my hard drive a few years ago was, that unless it's configured in a really rare and unnecessary way (which, of course, mine happened to be :P), then everything is recoverable. It's all on there somewhere.

If the programs don't work, hit up Best Buy and Future Shop and ask how much they charge for HD recovery. Most places will only charge you if they recover stuff, but it might be pricy. Of course, a couple hundred bucks might be worth it for what you'd be recovering (I'm not sure, though... for me, it would be).

Good plans, thank you, I shall look into the freeware. I don't think there's anything on the drive that's worth a lot of cash to me, I may let my brother's friends who are good at computers give it a try for free :)

Thansk. I'm sure it could have been worse... on the positive side I do have a huge new external harddrive that I never would have thought of buying had the D drive not died on me... I'm sure it'll work out okay. Most of what I lost will be recoverable.

hehe as do I, I didn't make it but I LOL everytime I see it :) I figure that I'll be able to replace much of what was on the D drive and there's no use crying about it now. I panicked when I first got the error message though.

Ouch ... I got that message when my hard drive crashed. Luckily I didn't lose anything, since I'd just been given the computer used, but I have no idea how to bring it back at that point. I had someone look at it who knows much more than me, and he said the hard drive was completely fried -- can't even be reformatted. :-(

Actually everything is still on the drive, I've been having great sucess using a program called Active File Recovery :)

I have a similar program for my Mac, although I've never needed to use it -- yet. *crosses fingers*
