Aug. 14th, 2005 01:07 pmA rant about Serenity (for those of you not in the know, this is the movie which is a continuation of Joss Whedon's series Firefly)
I am SO sick of seeing Firefly fans being very elitist over their show. I keep seeing rants about how the movie hype is making new fans and they're sick of seeing people getting excited about a show that they knew was great way before it became popular. This is fab for them and I think that they should feel proud that they were on the bandwagon earlier, but don't shun the new fans.
Newsflash, Firefly did not get high enough ratings, hence it was canned. This does not say anything about the quality of the show of course, it's just a fact, not enough people were on the bandwagon in the first place. Now the fan base is growing. There are rumours that if Serenity does well then the show may be brought back on the air. For this to pan out it can't just be the original fans going to see the movie this has to be huge. So if you liked your show so much and you want it to be brought back, welcome the new fans.
I liked the Buffy and Angel fans so much becase there didn't seem to be so much elitism there. I of course love the fact that I started watching and taping form the first ep on and thought there was something special there :) go me. This doesn't mean I don't respect that most people did not do that and many new people became fans each year.
It is nice to be a fan of something from the beginning and watch it develop. It's great that Serenity got made and that Joss is deditcating it to the fans. BUT new fans are good too.
