Yay Harry Potter! We got ours from the Borders in the Time Warner Center (last year we did B&N but this year we chose Borders because we had a credit there). They had a "Grand Hallows Ball" set up on the landing outside the store. I think a couple of bands played early in the night (we got there around 10:30) and they had punch & cookies, and two ice sculptures, one of Hogwarts and one of Dumbledore. They also had a costume contest. Inside the store they had a bunch of activities set up as well - some games in the kid's area, a "Divination" room with a fortune teller, "Honeydukes" sweet shop where they were selling all the HP candies plus popcorn, cotton candy, etc.
Borders did a wristband system for all the pre-orders; when you got there you signed in and they gave you a wristband with a number. Then at about 11:30 they started getting people lined up by number, so the people who'd gotten there earliest got their books first and you didn't have to stand in line all night. It worked pretty well, and they are a small store anyway so there'd have been no way for 1000 people to stand in a line all night. We were in the #600's so we had to wait a while but it was ok. If I'd known about the number system I'd have gone earlier to pick up the wristband but oh well.
I started reading this moring, and now I'm going to read some more!
