We have moved :) (my roommate and I, not the royal "we")

The apartment is still a mess of boxes but slowly it's looking more and more as though people live here. And today the cable and internet were set up... there's a little more problem with the phone but we're working on it ;) MSN will be my main source of communication for the next little while.

I also put together an ikea shelf unit without quitting. Most often with Ikea furniture I have to quit half way through as it all falls apart and then try again many hours later, but I did this shelf in maybe 20 minutes AND with the wrong set of instructions lol perhaps that's why it worked easier ;)

I wont ramble on much about moving since it's not really interesting if you're not the one doing it BUT I will say, movers are totally worth paying for! I'm SO glad we had them, it made the day that much less stressful.

Thanks for all of the kind words from the people who commented on my last entry, there will be pictures as soon as we have less boxes everywhere :)

Congrats! I am in awe of your Ikea-fu. :) So much better than mine.

Oh, and something I learned from my own place: if your fridge/stovetop/whatever is really gross with baked on...things, mix a little white vinegar with baking soda, and scrub with an old toothbrush. That stuff's magic, I swear!

Ohhh that's a fantastic tip. Thus far the apartment is clean, we scrubbed it a few weeks before moving in but I spill all of the time so cleaning tips are golden :)

Are you still able to come to London anytime around the Slean concert (the 17th) I'll be in town from the afternoon on the 17th until sometime on the 18th.

Another good thing is to toss half a lemon-or even just a bunch of lemon juice-in a bowl of hot water and then microwave it for a few minutes; it'll help you de-gunk the inside, and it gets rid of nasty food-smells. (It's good if you're lazy about cleaning, too. *G* All you'll have to do is wait for most of the steam to clear, and then wipe down the inside with a damp cloth.)

As for the concert, I doubt I'll be able to come into London on the Thursday. I do, however, have a few more days of vacation time, so I could ask my boss for the Friday off, and we could get together then. Depending on when you're leaving on Friday, of course.

I have no definite plans for leaving, I just have to leave sometime that day since we check out of the hotel that morning. I don't want you to have to use one of your vacation days though if you have anything else planned. If you're free though we could go for lunch or something. I may have a couple of friends from the concert still with me but they're great friendly people. I'm not sure what time they have to head back to TO.

I love putting together ikea furniture! It may be a little frustrating at times, but once I'm done I feel so accomplished and proud. :)

Movers are TOTALLY worth paying for.

And ... LOVE your Icon!!! Sorry, but I know so few Oz book fans that I just had to mention it. :-)

Thanks :) I love those Oz illustrations. They were my very editions of Oz books so the art holds a special place in my memory.

It was years before I realized there were color illustrations inside some of the editions, which weren't inside the reissues that my parents bought for me. Amazing artwork.

Finding color plates

If you can find them! The ones I located were at our local library, and in very poor condition. That's also where I first discovered there had been Oz books written after the first 14; I was shocked!

I'll work on finding them... perhaps after my goad of collecting first editions of the first 14 books...

1st editions??? Wow ...

Have you ever heard of the Ozfest in Chesterton, Indiana? Sadly, it's mostly dedicated to the '39 movie, but they've got a museum and decorations, and show the movie on their big outdoor screen every October. I got an interesting book that covered the entire Oz phenominon there. Of course, I'm sure it's not the only Ozfest in the country. :-) I think I've told you before that I've been by the little lake cottage in northwest Indiana, where L. Frank Baum used to vacation when he lived in Chicago.

I think when I have a little more income I'm going to check out one of those Oz festivals, I think they'd be so fun to try.

Nope you never told me about your visit to the cottage :) Story please?

Oh, there's not really a story; I had an internet friend who lived over toward northwest Indiana, and when I went over to visit we drove around the lake to see the cottage. It's privately owned and not even listed on tour guides; just a little place on the lake.

Baum lived in the Chicago area at about the time his Oz books were first becoming popular, as I recall. Anyone who had the means to at that time would leave the city during the summer.

Later he decided to get involved in the brand new movie making industry, and moved out to a home he called "Ozcot", in a tiny town that some other movie people were just being attracted to, called Hollywood. He was involved in making several Oz related silent movies in the 'Teens, but died before MGM turned the first book into a musical in 1939.
