I went to go see Pirates of the Caribbean today *squee*
I'm going to be probably in the minority here, I loved it! I think this movie is being killed by reviewers because it's got a really fast paced somewhat tricky part and definitely could have used some editing to be what most people want to see. As for me I'm more than pleased to be shown too much movie in this case and then I can just work through what is less important later. I compared it to many people saying that J.K. Rowling needs an editor for her later books. Yes at times there is stuff in there that could go but it all tends to be entertaining and it's not like the added length is hurting sales so why not leave it in and the fickle people can skim it. Pirates is like that. I though everything was good... there was some stuff that got a little surreal and art film like that felt a little out of place in this type of movie BUT it was still entertaining so why not leave it in?
The complaints I've heard again and again about this movie was that it just didn't make sense. It actually made a lot of sense but it had a lot of plot and I think people just are missing key points and getting confused and frustrated and then deciding that because they didn't get it the movie made no sense. Wrong, if you don't get it perhaps you need to watch less reality crap on tv and learn to follow a fast paced plot.
The movie is a good 3 hours long but I was entertained the whole way through and am looking forward to seeing it a second time this week.
Now from the first one I've been a firm Jack Sparrow/Elizabeth Swann shipper. He's much more fun. But even though the second one teased like woah at that I really had no illusions going into this one that I'd get my happy ending because it's a Disney movie and the stalwort hero must get the girl blah blah blah. BUT I really liked the twists that went on with this one... and even though I said spoilers I don't want to give it all away... but I do have a bit of a fanfic plot bunny running wild in my mind now. The writers did such a fabulous job making both sides of the fandom happy I think.
Keith Richards was fantastic. Of course he didn't really have to act for his role, but he had a much bigger part than I'd heard he was going to have so that was amusing like woah.
Keira Knighly as Elizabeth Swann was not half so whiny and annoying as reviewers made her out to be. I think she did a fantastic job.
Orlando Bloom I think was more hot in the second movie but did come off very Errol Flynn pirate-y by the end of this one which was amusing. Although I still remember Erika's quote comparing Will and Jack. "Will is clearly greasy and dirty looking while somehow Jack Sparrow just is not" it still holds true :)
Johnny Depp was FANTASTIC and I think should pull in an oscar for his performance this year.
I also adore the score :)
in short: fantastic way to wrap up the series and if anyone wants company seeing this movie this summer I am so in!

Date: 2007-05-28 02:06 am (UTC)(I liked the movie too. Like you said -- it's 3 hours, but it never gets boring and there weren't any scenes where you're just like, "Okay, okay...get on with it already!" You know? :))
