Oooh a ball! That sounds fun! The Indigo bookstore I was at did the wristband thing as well for people who'd preordered to have their copies in the store at midnight. I hadn't done that but it was a smaller store, most of the fuss I think was at their main store up the street, so there wasn't a huge line when we got there. When we were leaving the line was throughout the store but I think it got really long mostly after 11.
