Saturday in NYC
Saturday morning we got up before the ass crack of dawn early so that we could rush for Spring Awakening. We got to the theatre around 8am and there was no chance at all. The line already had at least 20-30 people in it who were not going to be able to get tickets. We asked the first person in line (well second person since the first person was a homeless person who was sleeping) what time they’d gotten there and they were there at 10pm the night before. I’m definitely too old for that so I didn’t feel bad. It wasn’t as though we could have shown up a little earlier and had a shot at tickets. So instead we went out for a nice breakfast and then went to the American Girl Store which is freaking adorable! I’d never been there before but they’ve just released a Julie doll from the 1970’s so Julie had to go see her and I just loved the store. We didn’t have those dolls in Canada when I was little but if we had I so would have wanted one. I love the historical dolls. I definitely would get one of these if I have a daughter. The store even has a doll hospital and a hair salon that you can check your dolls into to be fixed up and in the bathrooms they have a doll holder! Just too much cuteness! You can also get matching clothes and pjs for you and your doll!
After that we wandered back to the theatre for about 10:30, the last part of the rush line was just going through the box office. There were a lot of people asking about standing room tickets etc so clearly a lot of people in line did not get seats. Why no one thinks to start a list is beyond me. For sure if I was standing at the end of a really long line I’d like to know if it was worth it. Anyways I’d decided to buy an $86 seat and Ava and Julie were going to try TKTS for the show. BUT when I got to the front of the line the box office guy asked if I was a student. I said yes thinking I was going to get a discount on my full priced seat and it turned out there was 1 rush seat left, no one had wanted it. So *yay* for fangirls travelling in pairs! I took the seat.
Then we went to the Roundabout theatre and I picked up my Pygmalion ticket. I’d pre-bought that one.
We had a Jamba Juice and also went by the random street fair that always happens the day before the BC/EFA Fleamarket. Usually it’s on 6th but this year it was on 7th. I bought a Wizard of Oz tin sign with an illustration of the Scarecrow and Tinman from the book. Then we went to Virgin where I picked up Into the Woods (with the intention of having Bernadette Peters sign it at the fleamarket) and I also bought Girl Interrupted as it was only $10. We went to leave but it was pouring rain so we just stayed at the café downstairs at Virgin until we absolutely had to head over to Pygmalion, it was still raining and I ended up buying an umbrella about ½ way there. I totally had brought an umbrella with me but there was no rain in the forecast so I hadn’t brought it to the city with me :( We made it to the theatre in good time and dried out as best as we could and then went to our seats.
Pygmalion was really well done. I’d just read the play a couple of days before so it was very fresh in my mind and I think that I enjoyed it more because of that.
The people next to me appeared to be a woman who works in NYC who was taking someone from the company but from an English branch of their company out to a show. She was definitely trying to end up taking him home with her that night, I hope he caught on LOL.
Back to the show, Claire Danes was really good. This is her first Broadway appearance and I can’t remember reading about her ever really doing theatre before, at least not professionally, she may have been doing stage while in school, so it was really impressive to see that she really can act. I was hoping that she’d be good as she really seemed to have talent based on her movie/tv performances but that doesn’t always translate to being able to perform on stage. Fortunately in her case it does.
After the show I spotted Kim Cattrell in the audience. She was trying to slip through the theatre to the back but the usher either didn’t know or didn’t care who she was and made her go through the lobby with everyone else. There were a lot of people snapping pictures but I refrained from that, it was neat to see her and all but since she wasn’t really trying to do a publicity thing it didn’t feel fair to take a picture. She did look fabulous though. She really does look as good in person as she does on television!
I met up with Ava and Julie after the show (our seats weren’t together) and we wandered out to find the stage door. Most incognito stage door ever! However, we ended up pretty much following Kim Cattrell to the stage door LOL so that was handy. Claire Danes still slipped out a separate door just down the street from us but Ava and I decided to go for it anyways and subtly chased her up the street (speed walking not running), she didn’t notice any chasing which was good because that would have been awkward and then some. I caught up with her and Ava and I both said that we’d liked the show and each had 1 thing signed, Playbill for Ava, Shop Girl DVD for me. It was obvious that Claire Danes was not used to the fan thing at stage doors yet but she was nice to us which was good :)
After the stage door Ava and Julie got TKTS tickets for Spring Awakening and we went to Chipotle for dinner and then rode the ferris wheel in the Toys R Us. We overheard a particularly dim tourist wondering how they got the ferris wheel into the store. I was tempted to tell her they lifted the roof off and dropped it in. Or that the front of the store is on hinges so they just swing it open in the night to move in large displays… but I behaved and didn’t say anything snarky to her.
After the ride we went to Spring Awakening. The show is pretty. I liked the music a lot. It definitely did not deserve 8 Tony awards. Too much hype. But I did think I’d really dislike Lea Michelle because of the hype around her looking like Idina and she did quite a good job. I think that off Broadway this would be a great show. On Broadway it felt like it was sort of lacking something… not sure what. But I really didn’t have a complaint with the show. It was good and I had fun, it just wasn't spectacular. The girl sitting in the rush seat next to me had arrived at 11:30 the night before. Apparently the understudy who went on for Jonathan Groff was popular ergo the rush line crazyness. I was amused that I’d shown up 11 hours after her and had an equally good seat though. It was cute to see someone who was such a huge fan of the show, she was on her 13th show and it just reminded me of the RENThead days. It’s fun to see kids getting into theatre.
After the show we went to try the Pygmalion stage door again to get Ava’s DVD’s and my Playbill signed. There were more people there this time and some jackass had a video camera out and was asked to stop filming. The security was shining a flashlight into his lens anyways so he wasn’t getting any footage but he wouldn’t stop filming so Claire Danes left. The guy also had hit me in the back of my head with his camera so I was doubly not impressed with him. He was trying to make it out like Claire Danes was a huge bitch leaving before everyone got autographs so I told him off for ruining it for everyone. At first they’d even said photos were allowed but she wasn’t going to be posing but as soon as this guy started filming they said no more photos. I got one that’s mostly of the side of her head before that but I stopped taking photos as soon as they said to. They really need barricades at the stage door because it’s got to be scary to have people surround you like that. Ava was talking to the security guy and he said they were getting them so hopefully they have them up by now.
And that was the end of Saturday night.
