weekend of Sarah Slean!

I just got home a little while ago from my weekend of seeing Sarah Slean. OMG "so fabulous" but I'll LJ cut it because I think I'll ramble on
Saturday morning I met up with Andrea at the Greyhound station in TO and we went to Peterborough which we both realized we had no idea where it was. As in Peterborough was just this random city we were going to, neither of us had any idea what other cities were near to it, it just was an entitiy all to itself.
Dell met us at the station in Pbo and we went to see where the venue was and then to buy Jim his concert tickets and I FINALLY bought a copy of Night Bugs (more on this soon) then we walked back to Dell's building. Pbo has a lot of hills. This is what distinguished it from Hamilton later on in our weekend. We just crashed in Dells room and ate some junk food and relaxed until it was time to get ready and go out for dinner.
Oh and in here is where I continute my Night Bugs story which I think I actually did write in the last entry so if you read that, skip this paragraph. Okay we played Night Bugs for Dell because she hadn't heard it before and my copy only had two songs on it! It was the promotional copy with Eliot and St. Francis on it but it was labled as the real cd. Neal had me check out the serial numbers and everything and they all matched up with his copy of Nightbugs. We later found out that the cover had one picture tinted teal on my copy, blue on everyone elses so maybe it was a fake... but we have no idea since it was new and sealed and everything. Very weird, but Neal bought it from me as a collectors item so that was okay. However I still need the cd.
We went to this awesome New Orleans style restaurant, Hot Belly Mama's maybe it's called? and I ate some sweet potatoe frites which were very yummy. Also we had red wine which I think that combined with the weather, the fact I was dehydrated and definitely hadn't eaten enough, and then tried to have more red wine at the show, led to my crazy-almost-migrane-headache during the show :(
Then we lined up two hours before showtime, eventually moving inside to get out of the cold. We heard a bit of the soundcheck but by then other people were starting to show up and they were being loud and not even noticing that there was music being played. Whatever. Then people got anxious and went upstairs, got booted back down and a couple of girls tried to sit infront of us, le boo. Jim and his daughter and two of her friends showed up and he asked why we weren't first and we said we were but the other people had jumped the line. So being called out they said that of course they'd let us go first (which they later regretted when they realized there were 7 of us all together but whatever, they tried to cut the line and that's not fair)
The venue was set up so nicely and we nabbed two tables right up at the front. One for the three girls and one for the Passioneers :)
Danny Michel opened and he is SO good. I would LOVE to see him play again and was very sorry that he wasn't the opener in Hamilton.
Oh and let me interject about the merchandise here. Sarah is now selling prints of her artwork, 5 pieces in all, two that are regular papersized and three that are smaller, and they're crazy affordable $10 for the big ones $5 for the little ones. I bougth them all. I can't wait to frame and hang them :) That was it for new Merch at this venue.
And then Sarah played, and I felt so sick and in so much pain but I really couldn't bare to leave so I stuck it out. The set list was:
Angel - which is a song I love but some annoying person had been requesting it a lot at the Ontario shows, and apparently at one of the shows in the states so I was avoiding asking for it. So I was so surprised and happy that she played it.
Out in the Park - always lovely. This is one of my favourite songs from the Day One album
Lucky Me - we kinda sucked at the "declined" etc for this song. I seriously don't like to sing out at all unless there are lots of people doing it, I can't keep on key to save my life so I need a crowd for singing participation lol.
Eliot - and now this song reminds me of how I used it to pull off a decent mark in English class with the prof who I didn't like and who also didn't like me last year.
My Invitation - I love this song live WAY more than I do the recorded version and she starts this one off commenting about how she has a problem with boys who play the cello: "I want them all"
Mary - she told a different story with this one. Usually it's about how her grandmother met a boy, got pregnant and he went to fight in the war (airplane bomber) and how her grandma had to wait for him to come home. This time she talked about how when her grandmother had come to Canada from Europe (I think) her mother was the only healthy one in the family. Her dad was seasick, her brother had measles, she had a flue so they all were quarentined on an island. The boat they were on was sunk on the way overseas so because they were all so sick they were the only survivors.
Duncan - This was one of my requests I'd asked for when I was in NYC so I was so happy she played it. I know that it gets played a lot but I love it every single time.
Somebody's Arms - This was my second request lol and I was so excited to hear this song live since we'd wanted to hear it on the last tour and she never played it.
Sadie - This Sarah called "the song for the kid I was going to have one day" and it was such a beautiful piece.
Sweet Ones - This was adorable. Sarah asked for requests and every called out songs and then Jim's daughter and her friends all put up their hands! SO CUTE! So they got to request a song and they asked for Sweet Ones. Sarah said that their wish was her command and sang it for them :) Again the singing was kinda lackluster from the audience participation side but we tried. Our table was more vocal for this one at least so we're working on it :)
Bank Accounts - someone did the trumpet solo *yay* and I love this song. Now working and not really caring what I'm working for except to survive... all of the rest of it still seems abstract to me so I just love hearing this song.
Universe - BEAUTIFUL song. Again I love it live. I actually do enjoy the album version as well but live it just gives me chills because it's so good.
Your Wish Is My Wish - A really beautifil way to end the set.
ENCORE
Day One - I'm always amused that when she mentions the Passioneers she looks over to where we're sitting :)
Pilgrim - this song live on Grand Piano is just so good. She just sounds so great and it adds such depth to the song.
Book Smart Street Stupid - I was SO excited to hear this song live as well because I adore it. I actually had requsted it just as Jim's daughter and her friends raised their hands lol so I think I was very lucky to get to hear it at the end :)
Andrea grabbed the setlist for me since I couldn't move :) Many thankyous, and I'll have your copy of it this weekend :)
After the show I actually ran into a girl from Laurentian. (Viv it was the girl who can look a lot like Poppy Montgomery) so that was very random. And then we hung out for a bit waiting for Sarah. I felt like I was about to die because my head hurt so much but I wanted to stay and get the setlist signed so I stayed. I end up having very little filter when I'm talking to Sarah, I just start and do not shut up lol so there was rambling about lining up for other shows including meeting Buffy cast and RENT. Oy, someone shut me up! Oh and we asked for Eidleweiss (sp?) in Hamilton but she told us she played it there last time so we had to think of something else.... Oh and I told her about my faulty Night Bugs cd and she asked if I'd gone back and demanded my money back... and I said nope because Neal was buying it, which led her to specualte on the size of his music collection lol (it's actually very normal, he has lots of cds but not like an excessive amount)
and then I stumbled back to Dell's place, crashed on the floor... didn't clean out my purse (the leftover sweet potatoe frites were in there and the container broke so they were everywhere and it was gross) and I slept. I woke up once in lots of pain and during that time decided I'd like to hear Sarah cover Over the Rainbow because I adore that song. Then more sleeping, followed by waking up, shower, repack, cleaning out a bag and putting a bounce sheet in the bottom lol and then heading out to catch our bus.
We bussed into TO and Dell came too so she could pick up some stuff then Andrea and I had a layover in TO and then headed out to Hamilton. By this time I felt like I was on tour, so much bus riding in the past week. Dell asks me whose fault this is. I answer that it is clearly Sarah Sleans for doing shows in the US that I could go to and then lots of Ontario shows ;)
This is long! I'm going to put a Hamilton review in the next post.

Date: 2005-11-09 06:13 am (UTC)PB is so damn boring. It's a retirement town. Seriously. My aunt's cousin or something lives there. And my cousin lives just outside it. Old people. More old people. And churches.
But yay to random road trips with no idea of the destination! That how adventyres are born!!! Hmm. I should learn to spell. I'm too lazy to backspace and fix that. Must move only forward, never back!!
You are still crazy.
