Hee I just got back from the charity screening of Serenity! I am SO glad I went to this. I even won one of the prizes after the movie!

My write-up is behind the cut, there are spoilers for the Big Damn Movie ;)

I feel like I just got a taste of what the long time Browncoat fans had when Serenity first was released in theatres. Jo and I got to the theatre around 3 and got in line. There were really nice people there, very enthusiastic but no one who was really over the top which was wonderful :) My sort of people :D

We went in and donated a little more money to Equality Now and I picked up a Serenity keychain and we also got the Equality Now bracelets and we had great seats. I was totally satisfied before the movie even started ;) Also, total side note, the theatre had really odd but awesome bathrooms. They've put stalls in every which way so in a space where most buildings would have 3 or 4 I think that they had 7 stalls, which made for very short line ups which I'm a fan of lol.

Before the movie started we had the "Happy Birthday Joss" moment and then we were treated with a video of Joss Whedon winning an award for his contributions to Equality Now which was a complete surprise for me and which was really a great speech. That man can make you want to laugh and cry all at the same time.

The movie itself was fantastic to see on the big screen again. Also, how wonderful is it to see a film like this with a theatre full of Browncoats?! Everyone was so into the film and you could just feel the energy as it began and that carried all of the way though. Of course Wash dying is very painful to see on the big screen again. I was so glad that Jo managed to not be spoiled about that. I thought for sure she'd hear someone referring to it before the movie started but no one did :)

I also found that this viewing I was picking up on a lot of things that I've missed the other times I'd seen the film. My favourite new discovery is that Mal, as he's heading off to get the video feed out to the cortex, looks at Inara last, there's a tiny pause, and he heads off. Little details like that are so fabulous.

I also found myself thinking "Sushi fic" upon seeing the goldfish in the bowl at Mr. Universe's place. That's such a beautiful transition shot and now it has some shipper fun to it as well ;)

I found myself feeling teary at random points of the movie as well, not just the big damn character deaths. There are some powerful ideas in this movie and Joss did a fine job keeping everything subtle but very present.

After the film ended they did the prize draw. I'd actually printed out the list of prizes and had pre-chosen what my top ones were but seeing as the theatre was packed (woohoo!) I figured that since I only had two tickets (mine and Jo's since she generously decided that she would give her prize to me if she won *thank you*) that I really didn't stand much chance of winning because there were people there who had 4 or 5 tickets... BUT I ended up being the third person called. I was very happy... and people laughed hehehhe. So [livejournal.com profile] juliet_a if you were there, that was me ;) I took the sterling silver Serenity pendant which is very beautiful :) I was HIGHLY tempted by the Jayne hats but as those pop up on ebay I figured that I'd buy one before next winter rolls around :)

Now we had to laugh at the lady next to Jo who was VERY into winning a prize. A few numbers were called twice (I guess people just put both of their ticket halves into the bowl instead of keeping one for the draw...) and one happened to be the number 209. The second time it was called a few people called back that it had been called already. And then this one woman was very agitated sounding and loudly calls out "I know you called it already because it's the inverse of my number!" Now firstly, that is not so. You have ticket 206, that means that the inverse of that would be 602, or if you want to flip it upside down then 509 I believe. All I could think of was the people who get mocked when they freak out about something in an icon com with replies of "icon making iz serious business" LOL she was all "serious business" about winning a prize. Prizes are extra, they are for fun, they are not what you paid your ticket for. You bought a ticket to see a movie. It was a fabulous movie, this is a happy day. Smile :)

But other than that I think things went off really well. A huge thank you to everyone who helped to organize the event. I was so glad to be able to come and it was even better than I thought it was going to be. I couldn't make the dinner that happened afterwards but I'm sure it was a blast as well :) I'd really love to see something like this happen every year, it would be a great yearly event. I'm also excited to see what our total was for the charity and what gets raised overall from these events :)

Can't stop the signal!

I like being boss.

Dude...crazy inverse lady...CHILL. I never got a good look at her until we all stood up to leave...but she was actually quite old as well...maybe in her 40's or something, but definitely not younger. And the way she was acting during the movie with the arm flalling...seriously...take a vallium or something.

I havn't tried my chocolate boulder yet...s-c-a-r-y...i'm sure i'll have a full recap for you soon.

All in all it was a really interesting/fun day...yeah! Thanks for the invite hun.

She was definitely an older fan, which is fantastic to see, I love that the show spans the age groups :) I didn't know she flailed as well... lol I hope she enjoyed herself, it was just odd that she seemed so negative on such a fun day you know.

I've nibbled the boulder, tis not bad but it's a lot of chocolate lol it'll take me a while ;)

I just found pictures for your icon, scary lol.

Yay! I'm glad to hear you had a good time; I'd have loved to be there with you, but, alas, it wasn't meant to be. I did, however, watch the BDM twice today (once with Joss-mentary and once without), so I'm not *too* bummed. (Except for my crying over Wash, and Zoe going all batshit on those Reavers; gets me every time.)

But I would really, really love for there to be charity screenings next year, too.

I think the event was a huge success, most of the counts aren't even in yet and almost $40,000 has been raised for Equality Now! I'm so impressed!

and I cry every time at that, and knowing it's coming, oh it's so sad. Damn Joss and his loveable characters! ;)

Glad to hear you had so much fun at the Serenity showing. Very cool that you won the prize you wanted.

I liked the way they organized our prize drawing here, everything was laid out in the front of the theatre and as the numbers were called the winners went up and chose what they wanted. That way at least you could pick something special to you or something you didn't already have. Two thumbs up to that idea :)

I hope they do these screenings every year :D

Lol, I think I saw the back of your head. I was sitting fairly far back in the theater because I had to wait for my friend before going in and she was running late. *I* was there on time though, goshdarnit. :) I'd never seen the movie before so it was really great to watch it with all the fans. Dear lord, though, there was one guy there wearing leather pants (saw him 'cause he won a prize) who really should not have been wearing leather pants. I mean, only certain people can pull off wearing those, and that guy? Was not one of them. Bah.

I didn't realize that you winners could pick whatever prize you wanted! That's cool. :) The woman in front of me picked the autographed photo of Adam Baldwin. She had one of the numbers that was called twice, which was weird because she did only have half her ticket. Strange. One of the numbers called was 102, and my friend and I had 100 and 101. So close, but still so far. I never win anything though so that was okay. Heh.

What's Sushi fic? Is that a fan thing or did you just make that up yourself? Lol.

I don't think there was a bad seat in that theatre, no matter what time you arrived :) It was a pretty sweet set up :)

LOL I noticed the guy in the leather pants as well when he went up for a prize.... to paraphrase from Hackers, "it's a privlege not a right" hehe

Sushi fic is actually a fanfiction group where a few fans thought out a Mal/Inara based storyline that takes place after the movie and it's been really well written. Thus far I've been enjoying reading it all :)

I was lucky enough to see Serenity on the big screen opening weekend, but I have a feeling your showing was even more fun. :-)

I saw it when it was in theatres the first time around (not opening weekend though, I hadn't seen the show so I had no idea how good it was going to be then) but my theatre wasn't as into it. There were a few people who laughed at the right spots but mostly I felt that I was pissing people off everytime I started giggling. Sitting in a theatre of Browncoats was definitely more fun, everyone was so into it which was a great way to see the movie. I really do hope they make these screenings a yearly event.

It makes a difference, seeing it in an audience of fans. You could tell who was the fan in the theater I was in, because about two thirds of the audience sat through the credits, having heard there was something special at the end (turned out to be an instrumental version of the original theme music). The theater workers were standing at the doorway with their brooms and dustpans, looking *very* confused.

Huh, I had a woman like that right behind me.. maybe you weren't far off from me!! heheh...

I also won prizes, twice *blush* with my two tickets... I gave my second, a copy of issue #1 of the comic with the Jayne cover, to my friend Andrea who's a total Jayne fan... the other prize I picked was a Serenity patch, very shiny! I was really interested in the pendants too... but I didn't get called that early on...

The dinner was ... well, service was slow, company was great... we had a really good time, and I met some great people... it's too bad you couldn't make it...

Anyway, nice to see someone local in this LJ place *G*

I was a couple of rows up from the reserved seating so there must have been a couple of ...intense... people around :) but hey as long as everyone had fun then it's all good. Some people just don't like draws if they don't win.

I read that the service wasn't too good at dinner but as long as you're with fun people that's not the worst that could happen :)
