elizalavelle: (Sarah Slean - NYC)
I do have a Harry Potter Deathly Hallows write up of sorts coming soon, I've just not had time to finish it yet, but one's partially done now :)

I've had a surprisingly busy week and just realized that for the rest of the summer much of my weekend time is booked. It should be fun but hectic for the next little while.

Monday this week I had a Harry Potter related illness, no really, I read myself into a migraine, oops. It's the crying while I read that did it, darn emotional story!

I was over at Jo's place on Tuesday helping her to trek books to second hand shops (and by helping I mean that I was there for company) and I found lots of fun books along the way (Serenity novelization, Finding Serenity, Farscape Forever and a handfull more but those were the highlights) then I got to go through Jo's books that didn't sell and went home with far too many books. However I have some darn shiny readnig material for the next little while. I've lost track of how many books I've read this year already, oops.

I also need to start planning a NYC trip soon, solidifying dates I'll be there and such. *YAY* vacation!

Yesterday at lunchtime there was a canary outside. Someone's pet I'm guessing. Poor little thing. We tried to catch it to keep it safe but it flew away and that was that. I hope it learns to survive in the wild.

Tonight I'm off to see Harry Potter OOTP :) Friendslist you've all been fabulous at not spoiling me, thank you! I'm trying to figure out when I'm buying book 7. I sort of want to do the line up to buy it at midnight BUT I'm a little concerned about that because I heard that the last chapter of the book has leaked and I'm afraid of being spoiled. I'll probably just go early the next morning to buy the book and hope I'm up before any mean people start spoiling what happens.

That being said I'll probably be offline a lot more from now until after I finish the book for fear of trolls posting spoilers. So until Sunday if you post anything that you think I'd be interested in then please leave me a link in my comments.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
6. Tag five people.

...this one is fun when most of my books are packed lol

And Winky here had the misfortune to come across the wand moments later and picke it up.'
'But then, she'd have been feet away from the real culprit!' said Mr. Diggory impatiently. 'Elf? Did you see anyone?
Winky began to tremble worse than ever. Her giant eyes flickered from Mr. Diggory to Ludo Bagman, and on to Mr. Crouch.
Then she bulped and said, 'I is seeing no one, sir ... no one ..."

The weekend is turning out to be quite splendid :) On Friday night I got a call from my friend Leigh who I'd not heard from in ages! I'm going to head out to visit her next weekend. She's now just over 5 months pregnant so I went out today to do baby shopping. I've been waiting for years for someone I know to get pregnant so I can do baby shopping! I love the little little things. I bought her baby 2 sleepers and a cute onesy (I just couldn't choose only one!) and then of course being me I had to go pick out a book. I wanted to get "I Love You Forever" but my assumption is that EVERYONE thinks of that book first so she probably already has it. But I did find a cute cardboard book copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit" which is another favourite so I went with that :) Much shopping all day but fun.

I also was trying to find "The Book of Dreams" by O.R. Melling and was highly disappointed to not find it. I found the 4 books in that series together in one volume which I considered even though I have the first three in a volume already. What almost got me is that the first book ("The Hunter's Moon") had been revised so I thought that could be neat to read. I started reading it in the store though and they've updated the references to be ones for the Lord of the Rings movies and that just doesn't do it for me so I passed on that. I'll have to find the stand alone volume on it's own somewhere.

Then I settled in for a quiet evening at home, did some dishes and cleaning, had a nice dinner and then was surprised by a phone call from Tom who was going to be heading by my place on his way home and had the third season of Farscape for me to borrow :) So he stopped by and we watched the first episode :) When I'm done the entire series and movie I'm going to have to do a full entry on my thoughts about this series, it's just brilliant and keeps getting better the further in they get!

So altogether the weekend is shaping up to be just lovely :) I hope everyone who's reading this is having a great weekend as well!
elizalavelle: (Sarah Slean - still lights and glows)
Alas the weekend has departed quickly yet again. I was house/dog sitting for my parents which meant that I had a pretty quiet weekend. My brother got a new computer (Mac laptop... iBook?) which is pretty sweet. I'm not really a fan of Mac computers but I did enjoy the little remote control for while I was curled up on the couch :)

As I've been getting more and more addicted to Farscape I decided a Vortex trip was in order for today so my brother and I went out and visted HMV, BMV and Vortex (the usual at that end of town) and did quite well. I bought a nice bunch of books and both Shaye CDs (one was given to me for free - tres awesome!) I found the last two seasons of Gilmore Girls for Nomi which she has been searching for since she moved to TO :) For myself I finally got a copy of The Corpse Bride and Ginger Snaps 2 (so now I can watch the third one I've had for months now lol) and also Pitch Black because Claudia Black is in it and I've been told the movie isn't bad. Oh and I bought the last third of season 1 of Farscape and the Peace Keeper Wars (which I will not watch before I'm done the series it was just not too expensive so I went for it.) My Farscape DVDs are set up differently than the ones I've been borrowing. There are 4 seperate discs instead of two double sided discs. It's all the same to me though :)

I also lucked out and not only was I able to borrow the last third of season 2 from Tom today I also got a ride home from him so I didn't have to fuss with getting my bag with freshly cleaned laundry (perk of housesitting - free laundry) and new books and DVDs on and off of the streetcar :) So much nicer to do it that way.

Next week shall be more housesitting, with working autoshow and I get to see Dell for brunch *yay*

Now time to get ready for bed and then regular work tomorrow :)
elizalavelle: (LastU - raging headache)
Well work today was stressfull like woah. By the end of the day I was so worn out and really looking forward to Grey's. Ahh Grey's Anatomy, you do not disappoint do you? A two part ep is definitely a great way to come back for the second half of the year. Without spoiling anything, I cried. Also Meredith looks like a freaking skeleton, if someone could spend an episode secretly hooking her up to a feeding tube or something that would be swell, or is that reserved for May sweeps? ;)

Thanks to everyone who rec'd books to me, keep 'em coming :) I'm on book 4 of the year now. Pretty much right on schedule, and enjoying myself greatly. I've also found someone who can outread me! [livejournal.com profile] willow_kat will probably be able to go through 100 books in January at the rate she's reading :) I'm amazed and impressed :)

Last night I had such random dreams... the most I can remember is being at the Empire State building with Neal on New Years Eve 2000 and wanting to be up at the top for midnight. It was 11:40 and the elevators were packed, they also were operating like the Tower of Terror ride in Disney World (i.e. dropping) so I didn't want to take them and we ended up getting on some weird ski lift thing, like one that you hang on to and it drags you up, like that only different. So odd.

I figure this stems from when we did get stuck in an elevator together and I thought we were going to drop 29 stories and die while Neal thought we weren't even moving up beyond the 2nd floor. What a swell time for my brain to remember. It turned out well in the end though and makes for a charming elevator story ;)

Time to sleep and see what random nonsense my brain can spin tonight :)

I have a belated resolution/assignment for myself... whichever. Anyway, I've decided that I'm going to read 100 books this year. Then promptly convinced Dell to do the same :) So anyone else who wants to try for reading 100 books in a year join in! AND if anyone at all has any really good books to suggest let me know and I'll add them to my list :) I'm onto book 3 so far. I think I'll do a LJ post at the end of every month with that month's reading and then at the end of the year put them all together :)

I was in the east end of town this weekend and got to see Dell! Much fun, we watched American History X (because I hadn't seen it yet, I had just bought it a little while ago and hadn't sat down to watch it until last night) which is a fine movie. Upsetting, conversation provoking and visually stunning. Then I wandered downstairs to her brother's apartment as my brother had ended up over there and I figured I'd see if he was leaving earlyish and have someone to walk with and the boys had just started V for Vendetta. Ergo I had to stay. I'd forgotten how important I really think that movie is. I for sure have to get the graphic novel sometime this year, and buy the DVD. I want to get the special edition one so I'm holding out until it drops a bit in price.

And I leave you with a quiz I nabbed from Rosie. My picture freaks me out!

You Are 42% Evil

You are evil, but you haven't yet mastered the dark side.
Fear not though - you are on your way to world domination.

One more day left until yet another long weekend :) I love having the vacation time but I'd also love to have the quiet time. This also throws my routine for work so I'm all out of sorts until I'm back in a regular routine.

A note to my roommate's cat. You're cuteness decreases by approximately 87% when you wake me up 25 minutes before my alarm goes off (this is 5:50 am) by purring beside my head and poking me in the head. Not my most favourite thing ever. Probably not his favourite thing ever now either as this results in him being pushed off of the bed.

Oh and a friend at work told me that WalMart was having a massive DVD sale (box sets 2 for $30!) so I went to check that one out by the WalMart nearest to me didn't have anything good really. I picked up The Craft and Center Stage both on sale though because those will be fun :) I was going to watch Center Stage tonight but it got too late, perhaps tomorrow night when I can stay up as late as I want to :)

Then I decided to walk up the road a bit to Chapters to spend my giftcard :) I bought Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris. I'm curious to read it before the movie is out and I have a soft spot for the Hannibal character... I also spent almost an hour wandering the store. One of the things I discovered to my absolute delight was that Five Little Peppers and How They Grew has been rereleased! I love that book, it was one of the dear dear ones from my childhood that I've read and reread over and over. I wonder if this means they'll put out the rest of the series? I had a moment of rapture when I saw that book was still around for kids to read :)

I'm actually almost through Little Women :) However I'm almost to the point where I cannot safely read it in transit (Beth) so I think I shall leave that one at home tomorrow and choose something else for the bus ride.

And on that bookish note I'm off to bed :)
elizalavelle: (Clone High - this blows)
Christmas has crept up on me. I only have a wee bit of shopping left to do but the season itself has really been evading me so far. I was all seasonal when I did most of my gift shopping but now I'm just back to regular again. Mostly happy but not really feeling Christmassy yet. Perhaps it's the SPRING weather...

Also, I realized that I've forgotten (once again) to plan for New Years. So if anyone is having a party or wants to offer to be my midnight kiss let me know ;)

I am determined to enjoy my holiday time though, and to relax while I can as last weekend was my vacation which was so not relaxing. Much fun, no relaxing. I actually finally took a nap today after work and now FINALLY feel ready to crash. That only took me what, a week to come down from whatever high I was on ;)

I've started re-reading Little Women for the umpteenth time (seriously I've been reading this book over and over since I was maybe 8 or 9) I'm on my second copy of Little Women but it's falling apart now :( I'm putting off buying a new one just because I really want a nice complete set of Louisa May Alcott books... but I think I may have to cave and pick up another copy to see me through until then.

Oh and if anyone I know on my flist has Rogers Home Phone instead of Bell (or any other ones) they just introduced FREE long distance calling between Rogers customers in Canada, so let me know and I can call you. That's pretty sweet :)
elizalavelle: (Violet Pickles)
I finally started adding to my Library Thing account... and will be buying a paid account asap because I'll hit the limit...oh in a day or so lol. However if anyone wants to browse my books you can do so here: My Library Thing catalogue. I've only gone through about 2 boxes so far... so there are MANY more to come, however I love this thing already. When I was younger I always liked organizing my books like a library, and now I can do that so much better :)
elizalavelle: (Violet Pickles)
Gah I read far too many books when I was little. So, readers on my friendslist, does anyone remember the following book:

I want to say that it has "Mr. Blunder" in the title but a vast amount of Google-ing has prooved me wrong...

There are two modernday children (a boy and a girl) who live with their mother and one day she gets summoned to a law office (which I thought was run by Mr. Blunder... again I'm probably totally off with the name which is where the problem lies) where she learns she's been left a house by some relative or other. The family is quite poor so they take the home.

Once there the two kids run into two ghost children outside, I think somewhere in their gardens possibly by a garden seat of some kind... anyways they go back in time with the two other children (also a boy and a girl) and somehow there's some plot which involves killing the children from the past to get money (perhaps a step mother storyline..) and the kids are often locked in the attic.

Somewhere in here the lawyer (Mr. Blunder or whomever) turns up and it turns out that somewhere he's to blame for the death of the two children and he was luring the other modern day children there to prevent what he did wrong.

I think there's a fire...

and that's all I can come up with. The thing is that I know SOMEWHERE I have the book, it's just a matter of pulling out all of my boxes of books and searching for it. Which I have to do as I get packed to move but that wont be for a few months :S For sure it had an odd title of some kind... and the cover I had wasn't very exciting because it's one of those books that I loved but everytime I came across it I'd forget that I love it, not so remarkable on the outside...

I realized tonight that I read a lot of books when I was younger that involved traveling through time somehow... clearly I liked that idea. I still do infact :)

**ETA** woohoo, I found it, and it appears the BBC made a movie of it as well.

IMDB entry The Amazing Mr. Blunden (I was close :) )

I don't see this one on Amazon.com which is a shame... of course I must now buy this movie. Hullo mission. I also want a Region one version of Swallows and Amazons and I'm so buying The Coot Club and The Big Six which I did not even know were made into movies.
elizalavelle: (Heathers change your world)
Today someone at the BBC called me an American. Gah! I finally gave up searching for 'The Secret World of Polly Flint' on my own and emailed them and they said it wasn't their series and since I'd seen it in "AMERICA" I should contact television stations there. Ummm I said Canada quite plainly in my email. I could narrow it to two possible Canadian stations for them but since it was a freaking BBC mini series neither the CBC or TVO could really be of much assistance. The BBC will be getting a snarky email back from me.

In yummy chocolate news I bought one of the Laura Secord eggs but they were all out of the butter cream ones so I went for the fancy cashew chocolate one and it is insanely good.

Oh and I picked up a copy of Angels and Demons today (the book before The DaVinci Code) and I'm wondering which of those two I should read first? My dad's getting me The DaVinci Code for my birthday and I have two books on the go right now so I won't be able to start a new one before my bday.... so anyone whose read both of them? Opinions? No spoilers please :)

I crossed a big item off of my things to do before I'm 25 list today, cut it right down to the wire, but I'm feeling quite impressed with myself today.
elizalavelle: (lucky me)
Squee for new books! My dad and I dropped by Value Village after dinner tonight and I came across the Walt Disney Parade of Fun, Fact, Fantasy & Fiction. In the box still and everything! They're from 1970 and so for kids books they're in quite good condition! My dad bought them for me and everything so that was sweet :) I can't find a good online picture of them but they're in two ebay auctions if that end over the next day or so: here, in their box and here without it.

Not so sweet, tomorrow I must pay bills, I was trying to hold out until my pay came in from my autoshow job but no such luck.

However life is of the good, LisaLisa is in town for a couple of days (she's at the Coldplay concert tonight) so I think I get to do brunch with her or something on Saturday. Much yay :)
elizalavelle: (spuffy intimidation by me)
Last night I had a dream, I was at a Sarah Slean concert, but it was after the concert and I went to go get Ravens signed.... and she got into a car and just drove off, no book signage for me. I tell you it's a sign, I'm NEVER getting my book signed! LOL

Today I found brand new copies of the entire set of Edward Eager books! I LOVE these books, they are childhood favourites of mine and are just fabulous. People, read them! I also bought this awesome long lightweight printed turquoise dress, which was perfect for today because it was uber hot outside. I also got new black modrobes, more black work pants :) Also I love mod robes, I wear them all of the time around home.

Yay Viv have been approved at 100icons, let's see the icons girlie! I want my dvd so I can get started on mine :) Tres exciting :)
